Northern Cardinal or House Finch? A Red Bird ID Checklist

A red head at the feeder is a useful first note. To narrow down the bird, look at its head shape, bill and the pattern across the rest of its body. This short comparison covers Northern Cardinals and House Finches in North American feeder observations.

Four details to compare

Detail Northern Cardinal House Finch
Head outline Prominent pointed crest. Low, fairly flat crown.
Bill Large, deep cone; adults have a red to orange-red bill. Compact seed-eating bill with a curved upper edge.
Adult male color Broadly red, with black around the base of the bill. Red around the face and upper chest, with a brown back and streaked underparts.
Overall outline Larger bird with a substantial body and long tail. Smaller, slimmer bird with a shallow notch in the tail.

Compare these features with expert photographs in the Cornell Lab’s Northern Cardinal guide and House Finch guide. The guides also link to range maps and similar species.

Check females and young birds too

A female Northern Cardinal is mostly warm brown with reddish accents and a crest. Young cardinals can have dark bills. Female and immature House Finches are brown and streaked. Start with shape and pattern when an individual does not resemble the familiar bright-red adult male.

A four-step feeder checklist

  1. Write the place and date. Use the linked range maps to check whether each candidate fits your observation.
  2. Record the head and bill. Sketch the outline or write “head partly hidden” if you did not get a clear view.
  3. Map the color. Note where the red occurs and whether you can see streaks across the belly or flanks. Try to get a second angle.
  4. Compare the whole bird. Keep an uncertain ID in your notes if several features do not agree. For a red finch, use the House Finch guide’s Purple Finch and Cassin’s Finch comparisons as well.

You can record those details on our free winter birdwatching log. Leave the species field open until you have enough information.
